‘Gets down on one knee..’ -Ed

A short story about the day we got engaged =)

Île Puemba, New Caledonia. October 11, 2019

Please excuse our attire and scruffiness, but at this moment in time we had been living onboard for 5 weeks; so honestly, I’d say we were looking pretty damn good.

We had just dropped anchor between two of the most remote islands I had ever seen, and once we were sure the anchor was set, Ed and I launched the dinghy so we could explore. Our first stop was on the tiny island of Noé with Ed’s mum to engage in some serious shell hunting. After about 30 minutes of wandering around the untouched Noé, Ed and I made the decision to venture off on our own via the kayak to the tear-drop shaped island of Puemba across the way.

The tide was low, making it difficult to maneuver through the reef surrounding the island, but we made it and no sea life was harmed in the process. As soon as we beached our kayak on Puemba’s beautiful white-sand beach, I couldn’t resist a swim, leaving Ed to fiddle with his camera and tripod on the beach. After a while of solo floating in the shallow water, Ed waded out and joined me. As we stood there in the shallow water holding hands and soaking up the beauty surrounding us, we felt so lucky. Just then, a large fish jumped and I quickly pointed in the direction of the splash, what happened next took me completely by surprise. I felt a slight downward tug on my other hand which was still intertwined with Ed’s, and as I turned to look at him, he was down on one knee in the water facing me.

By now I think you can probably guess what happened next.. I said yes, of course, but I’ve decided to spare you the sappy details and keep those just between us. I did however include some of the photos taken during our time spent on Puemba that amazing day. Enjoy! And thank you for reading!
